Richard Adelman is a Reader in English at the University of Sussex. He is the author of The Epistemologies of Progress; Idleness and Aesthetic Consciousness, 1815–1900; and Idleness, Contemplation, and the Aesthetic, 1750–1830; as well as a coeditor of Political Economy, Literature and the Formation of Knowledge, 1720–1850.
