These epigraphs have been preserved in anthologies and gleaned from weathered headstones. Hear Michael read from and discuss his book at Book Passage in Corte Madera.

Ronald S. Coddington’s three books with JHU Press—Faces of the Civil War, Faces of the Confederacy, and African American Faces of the Civil War—feature photographic portraits (cartes de visite) of Civil War soldiers, along with the stories of their lives during and after the war. The author will join us to explain his own evolution from photography collector to historical sleuth, and describe how the resulting books offer a compelling perspective on the most dramatic and wrenching period in American history. We will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. with lunch, including beverage and dessert, followed by the lecture.
