The Envelope, Please ...

By Lisa Klose, Journals Marketing Manager Last week, the People’s Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards kicked off the 2014 Hollywood awards season. Ok, I will openly admit that awards season is a guilty pleasure of mine. I mean, what’s not to love? I am not necessarily talking about the red carpet walks, the marvelous couture, the speeches (both beguiling and boring alike), and the endless shots of celebrities du jour. I am not even talking about the marketing, money, or egos. The reason I love these awards shows is because—whether music, television, or film is being honored—they put a spotlight on some incredible work. Here in the JHU Press Journals division, we’re coming to an end of an awards season of our own. 2013 MarCom Awards  Administered by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP), the MarCom Awards recognize outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals. MarCom entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, PR firms, design shops, production companies, and freelancers. Over 6,000 entries from throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries were entered into in the 2013 competition. Awards won by the JHU Press Journals Division are as follows:

2013 Best In Maryland Awards Sponsored by the Maryland Chapter of The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the Best in Maryland Awards are presented annually to public relations practitioners who, in the judgment of their peers, have successfully addressed a communications challenge with exemplary professional skill, creativity, and resourcefulness. Over 50 entries from throughout the state were judged in the 2013 competition.

Competition was stiff and included area organizations like BGE, Comcast, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Maryland Port Administration, Maryland State Highway Administration, Northrop Grumman, and a good number of the large advertising/communications firms in the region. Awards won by the JHU Press Journals Division are as follows:

2014 Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) Awards Governed by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ), the CELJ Awards recognize outstanding achievement in scholarly journal publication with awards each year for its member journals. A CELJ award or citation gives independent testimony to a  journal's quality and visibility. The journals receiving awards in past years showcase the range and diversity of CELJ members.  Awards won by JHU Press journals are as follows:

Mark Twain once said “To refuse awards is another way of accepting them with more noise than is normal.” So we will accept ours gladly, thankfully, and with a smile. It feels nice to have our work and the work of JHU Press journals recognized. It’s rewarding to feel like we (staff, editors, authors, and audience) are making a positive professional contribution. And while our awards may not be wrapped in the glamorous pomp and pageantry of Hollywood awards, they are equally as thrilling and appreciated. Thank you! [Turn.  Exit stage left.]
