Open Access

The advancement and broad dissemination of knowledge are founding principles of Hopkins Press. The Hopkins Press Journals Division supports green and gold open access (OA) publication options in addition to traditional subscription-based access.

Green OA

Hopkins Press journal authors are permitted to deposit a digital copy of their final manuscript in their noncommercial institutional repository, provided the repository is not discipline based and does not accept contributions from outside the institution. If required by law, authors may also include their final manuscript in an OA archive such as PubMed Central.

This self-archiving policy pertains to the final manuscript version of the article only and not to the final published version in any format, including PDF. Deposits must credit Hopkins Press as publisher and identify the appropriate copyright holder.

Hopkins Press complies fully with the OA requirements of NIHR, UKRI, and Wellcome. Where required by their funder, authors retain the right to distribute their author accepted manuscript via a noncommercial institutional and/or subject repository (e.g., Europe PMC) under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license for release no later than the date of first online publication.

Gold OA

Authors, their sponsors, or funders may choose to pay an article processing charge (APC) in order to make a final published article freely available online in perpetuity. In such cases, Hopkins Press will help authors comply with OA requirements of sponsors and major funding agencies, such as Wellcome Trust and NIH.

Refund Policy: Hopkins Press will not issue a refund for APCs. Where an article is published open access and fails to meet a specific funder’s requirements, JHUP will work with the author and funder to correct any issues within 60 days of notification.

Platinum OA

Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies is the first platinum OA journal to join the Hopkins Press roster.

Platinum OA means that every issue of JIOWS publication is immediately available online without a subscription fee, authors are not charged article processing charges, and authors retain copyright under a CC-BY-NC-SA license.
