Quarterly
American Quarterly has been the preeminent guide to American studies since 1949. With a broad, humanistic understanding of American culture, the journal encourages cross-disciplinary work. In addition, it publishes forums, exhibition and book reviews, and short, timely think pieces. American Quarterly is the official publication of the American Studies Association (ASA).

Peer Review Policy

Submission Policy

American Quarterly accepts only original work that has not been published nor is under review elsewhere, including in other languages.

Type of preliminary review

Independent review by the Editor and one of three Associate Editors.

Type of review

Double-blind

Criteria for review

  • Rigor of research and analysis
  • Originality of argument
  • Grounding in relevant current scholarship
  • Relevance to a broad interdisciplinary audience of American Studies
  • Clarity of writing

Revisions process

All submissions getting moderate to positive reviews by external reviewers are asked to revise and resubmit. (No submission is ever accepted as is, even with positive reviews.)

Review process once revised

The revised manuscript is reviewed by the entire Board of Managing Editors along with the original manuscript and the reviewers’ reports. The Board decides whether to accept, reject, or ask for another revision. In case of another revision, the revised manuscript is again reviewed by the Board.

Timetable

For the submissions that are eventually accepted for publication, the turnaround from submission to publication is approximately 18-24 months, depending on the time it takes for external review and the number of revisions involved.

Review process for informal pieces

Forum (convener proposes the forum to the Board of Managing Editors and, if accepted, solicits and reviews essays and makes editorial comments) essays do not go out to blind peer review, but once the forum is compiled, it is submitted to the Board of Managing Editors, which may make some editorial suggestions for further revision.
