General Information

Essays should offer a summary and critical evaluation, rooted in the existing literature, of the book(s) under review. Essays should have a title that is different from the book(s) under review. Due to space limitations, we ask that you stay within the word count allotted for your review. Please inform us in a timely fashion if circumstances compel you to miss your deadline or make it impossible for you to complete your review. Our general policy is that reviews are due three months from the receipt of the book(s). The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts that do not conform to the critical standards of the journal.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts should be prepared using any version of MS Word. Be sure to make a backup copy of your manuscript. You will need to send an electronic version of your manuscript, attached to an email, to our editorial offices: akelman@ucdavis.edu. Your manuscript will be copyedited and sent back to you for your approval.

Please follow our heading style, supplying the following:

  • the title of your essay
  • your full name
  • publication information for the book(s) under review, as in this example:

Robin L. Einhorn, Property Rules: Political Economy in Chicago, 1833-1872. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1991. xvii + 295 pp. Figures, maps, appendices, notes, bibliography, and index. $32.50.

Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style on capitalization, quotations, hyphenation, etc.

When quoting directly from the book(s) under review, please cite the page numbers in parentheses following the quote or at the end of the sentence and before the period, i.e. (p. 12). When citing works for comparative purposes, cite only author, title, and (year) within the text rather than in the notes. Throughout, use italics rather than underlining.

At the end of the essay, please append two or three short biographical sentences, including your name, affiliation, and latest publication and/or work-in-progress.

For notes, please DO NOT use the software's endnote function; instead insert superscript numbers in the text manually and include the notes at the end of the essay in list form, following your biographical sentences. Follow Chicago Manual of Style for notes, but omit place and publisher. Please keep notes to a minimum.

Peer Review Policy

A journal devoted to review essays, Reviews in American History does not typically publish original research. RAH’s editors solicit almost every essay that's published in the journal. Our submission and publication policies and practices do not lend themselves to peer review. Our process is as follows:

The editor-in-chief edits every submitted essay, as does the journal's managing editor. The editor-in-chief desk-rejects some essays if they are unsuitable for the journal or of insufficient quality. Those essays that are not desk-rejected—the vast majority of essays submitted to the journal—receive an initial edit in the editorial office. Edited essays are sent back to the authors for any changes. The editors then re-read all of the essays and send the authors proofs for review. In some rare instances, we ask a member of our editorial board to do an additional editorial review. The time from submission to review to publication varies, but it's almost never more than six months or so.
