For over 50 years, SubStance has published rigorous, creative contributions to contemporary critical debates from a range of theoretical perspectives. Consistent with our commitment to readers and authors to expect the unexpected, our series SubStance At Play invites experimental visual and digital submissions that seek to extend the boundaries of established scholarship.
Please send the manuscript as an attachment to Anita W. Harris, Managing Editor, at anita@substance.org, considering the following guidelines:
Book reviews and requests should be submitted to our Book Reviews Editor, Rosemarie Scullion, at rosemarie-scullion@uiowa.edu
The Hopkins Press Journals Ethics and Malpractice Statement can be found at the ethics-and-malpractice page.
SubStance seeks to publish original work, which should not be under consideration at another journal. For our submission policy, please see our Guidelines for Contributors. In addition, please note that articles written in French will be considered for review, but need to be translated to English should they be accepted.
Translations of work published in a language other than English are occasionally published if they make important contributions to fields of interest of the journal.
All submitted articles are subject to blind peer review by our editors. Our review process can take up to six months. If we ask for revision, revised and resubmitted articles are reassessed within approximately one month. Publication timetable depends on space, but is usually within one year of acceptance. We publish three issues per year, in Spring, Summer, and Fall.
